Abigale Lee
Mills (born September 21 1965) was an American dance instructor, choreographer,
and reality television host. Abby Lee Dance Company is her idea, and it was a
reality show that aired for eight seasons on Dance Moms. Miller confessed on
June 27, 2016 to the charge of felony bankruptcy fraud. She was sentenced for
one year and a day in federal prison, and released on March 27 in 2018. In
April of 2018 she was diagnosed with lymphoma, a form of cancer that made her
unable to walk. In order to move about, she now uses wheelchair. Miller has
been a dancer since childhood in Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, located in a
Pittsburgh suburb. She was studying under her mother's direction at the Maryen
Lorrain Dance Studio. At the age of 14 years old, Miller was assigned the task
to choreograph and coach one of her mother's dance competition teams. Miller
was given the reins of the studio and renamed Reign Dance Productions in 1995.
Miller was recognized as a certified dancer by Dance Masters of America in
1986, and became an active member of Dance Masters of Pennsylvania Chapter 10
in February 2012. However, her membership was terminated by DMA in February
2012, after the DMA stated that Miller's reality-TV series Dance Moms was
"a complete distortion of dance educators and students and was detrimental
to the dance industry."
